Go beyond the basic search

Some of the most useful family-history clues are hidden in specialized collections: passenger lists, pension files, land patents, maps, newspapers, and local archives. This guide groups additional research destinations by the kind of evidence you are looking for.

Start with the event, place, and time period you are investigating. Then choose the collection most likely to have been created by an agency or person close to that event.

Passenger arrivals & immigration

Ellis Island Passenger Search — Explore passenger arrival records and ship manifests associated with Ellis Island and the Port of New York.

NARA Immigration Records — Learn about federal immigration and naturalization records and research paths by era.

USCIS Genealogy Program — Request historical immigration and naturalization files held by USCIS; fees and eligibility rules may apply.

Military & federal records

NARA Military Records — Research U.S. military service, pension files, and related archival records.

Fold3 — Search a subscription archive specializing in military records and historical documents.

NARA African American Records — Explore federal records relating to African American history, including military and post-emancipation collections.

NARA Access to Archival Databases — Search selected digitized federal archival datasets; not every archival record is included.

Land, maps & migration

BLM General Land Office Records — Search federal land patents and related images for public-land states.

National Library of Scotland Maps — Explore historic maps to understand place names, boundaries, and landscapes.

David Rumsey Map Collection — Search historical maps that can help reconstruct settlements, roads, and geographic context.

Books, newspapers & cultural collections

Digital Public Library of America — Discover digitized photographs, letters, maps, books, and other materials from U.S. cultural institutions.

Newspapers.com — Search a commercial historical newspaper archive; subscription access is generally required.

GenealogyBank — Search historical newspapers, obituaries, and published materials; subscription access is generally required.

Chronicling America Collection Search — Explore historic U.S. newspaper collections through the Library of Congress.

North Carolina & Virginia

DigitalNC — Explore digitized North Carolina newspapers, yearbooks, photographs, and other historical materials.

North Carolina Family Records Online — Start with State Library of North Carolina resources and discover available family-history records.

Virginia Memory — Explore digitized Virginia documents, photographs, maps, and archival materials.

Search catalogs & full text

FamilySearch Catalog — Search books, microfilms, digitized materials, and locality records.

FamilySearch Full-Text Search — Explore searchable text in digitized historical documents; collection coverage continues to change.

A few safeguards before you cite a record

Check the collection's date coverage and geographic scope. A search result or index is not always the original record. Open the image or original document when available, capture the full citation, and compare it with independent sources.

Government and archive websites may offer free finding aids while charging for some copies or record requests. Commercial newspaper and military archives may require subscriptions. Check current terms before purchasing or submitting a request.

Bring your discoveries into one research plan

Use the FYBF DNA Match Research Log to organize DNA clues and the Family History Evidence Log to record source details, conflicts, and conclusions.

Free DNA Match Research Log — Track matches, shared DNA, hypotheses, and next steps.

Free Family History Evidence Log — Record citations, evaluate sources, and separate evidence from assumptions.

Explore the main FYBF Library — Return to the broader research directory.

Explore FYBF research and reunification services — See available research and consultation options.

FYBF is independently operated. External resources are owned by their respective organizations; inclusion is for research discovery and does not imply a partnership or endorsement. No record or search guarantees a particular identity or outcome.
